Jewell Loyd became the first former Notre
Dame player in the WNBA's history since
1998 to be named Rookie of The Year. The
No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 WNBA Draft re‑
ceived 21 votes, while New York's Kiah Stokes
finished second with 16 and Indiana's Nat‑
alie Achonwa — a former Irish team‑
mate of Loyd — was third with two.
Achonwa sat out last season because
of a knee injury. Loyd averaged rookie
highs of 10.7 points and 25.9 minutes
per game for the Seattle Storm.

Punt returns and kick returns
for touchdowns by Notre
Dame during the six‑year
reign under head coach Dan Devine
from 1975‑80. We note that be‑
cause the Irish returned a punt for
a score for the first time in Brian Kel‑
ly's six seasons in South Bend, with
freshman C J SA N D E RS doing the
honors against Massachusetts Sept. 26. Interestingly, Devine's
teams did score five times on blocked punts and twice on
fake field goals or punts during his tenure.
