UNDER THE DOME running back Jerome Heavens, who would finish with 109 yards on 17 carries, led the next touchdown drive and two‑point conversion. 35 Years Ago: Oct. 11, 1980 In his first career start at tail‑ back, senior Jim Stone rushes for 224 yards on 38 carries, culmi‑ nating with a 27‑yard touchdown in No. 7 Notre Dame's 32‑14 vic‑ tory against No. 13 Miami, which features sophomore Jim Kelly at quarterback. From 1977‑79, Stone either backed up future first‑round pick Vagas Ferguson or played as a reserve flanker in 1978 behind future pro Pete Holohan. As a se‑ nior, Stone loses the starting spot to sophomore Phil Carter, who rushed for 254 yards the week prior at Michigan State before suf‑ fering an injury on his final carry. It remains the lone time in school history that an Irish run‑ ning back — and two different ones, no less — surpasses 200 rushing yards in back to back weeks. Meanwhile, junior kick Harry Oliver connects on a school‑record‑tying four field goals in one game for the second week in a row. 20 Years Ago: Oct. 7, 1995 No. 23 Notre Dame tallies 15 points in the final 1:24 to upset No. 15 Washington in Seattle, 29‑21. Leading 21‑14 with less than three minutes remaining, the Huskies line up to punt when an errant snap results in the Fighting Irish taking possession at the Washington 18. Four plays later, freshman running back Autry Denson scores from seven yards, and then quarterback Ron Powlus finds an inexplicably uncovered Derrick Mayes in the end zone for the two‑point conversion and a 22‑21 lead. Washington responds by driving to the Notre Dame 33 while trying to set up a game‑winning field goal, but cornerback Allen Rossum picks off a Damon Huard pass that he returns for a 76‑yard touchdown with 28 seconds left. It is the 11th time in head coach Lou Holtz's 10 seasons Notre Dame rallies from a fourth‑quarter deficit to win. — Lou Somogyi Senior Jim Stone compiled 38 rushing attempts for 224 yards and a touchdown in No. 7 Notre Dame's 32-14 win against No. 13 Miami on Oct. 11, 1980.
