It did again when the Irish committed four turnovers in the 24-22 loss at Clem- son, while the Tigers had only one. That made it eight straight games, dating back to last year's 31-28 loss to Louisville, that the Irish were not able to generate more than one turnover in a contest (they totaled six overall in those eight contests). Forcing two per game is generally a good benchmark. "When you're playing defense, you're always talking about and preaching and really trying to indoc- trinate your players into getting those turnovers," Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly said. "But you've got to be in the right place. You've got to tackle well. You've got to do the fun- damentals right first before you start getting those turnovers." During the 8-4 regular season in 2013, Notre Dame's defense forced only 13 turnovers, the lowest figure at the school since the early 1950s (when 10-game seasons were the norm). The figure improved to 17 when four were generated in the 29-16 Pinstripe Bowl win over Rutgers. New defensive co- ordinator Brian VanGorder employed a more aggressive scheme in 2014, but … "Just being aggressive by nature doesn't necessarily mean that you're going to get the turnovers that you're looking for," Kelly said. "I know what we do in practice. We're working at stripping the ball. "We changed our practice format this year where we actually thud our backs, where we come up and put TURNOVER TRAVAILS — ON DEFENSE
