UNDER THE DOME 45 Years Ago: Oct. 17, 1970 Head coach Ara Parseghian's No. 3-ranked Irish improve to 5-0 with a 24-7 victory at No. 18 Missouri — led by Parseghian's eventual successor, Dan Devine (1975-80). Notre Dame finds itself behind for the first time this year when the Tigers take a 7-3 third-quarter lead, but quarterback Joe Theismann follows with touchdown passes to Tom Gatewood and running back Ed Gulyas. The latter comes on fourth down from the Missouri 30, and the out pattern looks for a moment like it is intercepted by a Missouri defensive back, who makes a break on the ball before Gulyas hauls it in and scores. 40 Years Ago: Oct. 18, 1975 One week after longtime Notre Dame athletics director Ed "Moose" Krause declares the 21-14 win at North Carolina the greatest comeback win in the school's football history — eclipsing the 18-13 win at Ohio State 40 years earlier — he amends it to the 31-30 win at Air Force on this day. At North Carolina, the Fighting Irish trailed 14-0 entering the fourth quarter. At Air Force, the deficit was 30-10 going into the final quarter. Sophomore quarterback Joe Montana overcomes three in- terceptions to finish 7-of-18 passing for 134 yards while directing three touchdown drives, the last capped by a two-yard run by freshman fullback Jerome Heavens with 3:23 remaining to improve the No. 15 Irish to 5-1. Heavens also tallies earlier on a 54-yard run and finishes with 138 yards on 20 carries. Anniversaries In Notre Dame Athletics History: Oct. 13‑19
