ND SPORTS BY JORDAN WELLS A fter an Oct. 4 road contest at North Carolina State and an Oct. 7 home game against Michigan ended with the same result — a 1-1 tie in double over- time — the No. 7 Irish (8-2-3) men's soccer team got back into the win column in dramatic fashion Oct. 10. Hosting ACC foe Duke at Alumni Sta- dium, the Irish led 2-0 after a goal from senior midfielder Patrick Hodan in the 54th minute. However, Duke an- swered with goals in the 58th and 74th minutes to even the game at 2-2, eventu- ally forcing the match into overtime. That's when sophomore forward Jeffrey Farina made his mark, clean- ing up a loose ball on a Hodan corner kick and attempted header by junior defenseman Matt Habrowski for the game-winning goal in the 97th minute. "It was very fitting that Jeffrey Fa- rina would get the goal because he got taken down earlier, toward the end of regulation," Notre Dame head coach Bobby Clark said. "He had a great chance [at a goal], was about to hit it and was taken badly out. It was really nice and fitting that he got the winning goal." The victory in extra time was the 17th straight over- time contest that ended in a win or tie by the Irish, a streak that dates back to 2012. Notre Dame outshot Duke 3-1 in the extra period, eventually knock- ing in the go-ahead goal. "We got the two goals up and were thinking we had w o n t h e g a m e , " Clark said. "Full m a r k s t o D u k e , they came back and fought their way back into the game. "At 2-2, we came back and started playing, but between our second goal and going to 2-2 we were pas- sive. Once it was tied we suddenly woke up and said we had to win the game. From then on we were the bet- ter team." The Irish then kicked off a three- game road tour at Virginia Tech Oct. 16, which was followed by trips to Northwestern Oct. 20 and Wake Forest Oct. 23. ✦ Men's Soccer Takes Overtime Thriller From Duke Sophomore forward Jeffrey Farina delivered the game-winning goal in Notre Dame's 3-2 overtime victory over the Blue Devils Oct. 10.
