M . , O C T . 2 4 E S P N MARYLAND FACTS COACH Mike Locksley (Towson, '92) COACH'S RECORD First game as Maryland's interim head coach; 2- 26 in two-plus years with New Mexico from 2009-11. 2015 RECORD 2-4, 0-2 Big Ten Conference - East RECORD VS. PSU The Nittany Lions lead the all-time series, 35- 2-1. MOST RECENT MEETING Mary- land scored 13 fourth-quarter points, including a 43-yard field goal from Brad Craddock with 51 seconds remaining, to win, 20-19, and lift the Terrapins to their first victory over Penn State since 1961. GOOD NEWS Four different true freshmen have scored a touchdown for Maryland this season, a program record. It's been four seasons since the Ter- rapins have had three true fresh- men score a TD. BAD NEWS Only one Big Ten team (Ne- braska) is penalized more often than the Terrapins, which get called for penalties nearly eight times per game. That makes for an average loss of 74.2 yards per game due to flags. DID YOU KNOW? M&T Bank Stadium will be the eighth active NFL stadium that Penn State has ever played in. Its first documented game in a pro- fessional stadium occurred in 1921 when the Nittany Lions de- feated Georgia Tech, 28-7, in front of 30,000 fans at the Polo Grounds in Upper Manahattan in New York City. TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT Penn State and Maryland tussle before kickoff of last year's game in Beaver Stadium. For the Nit- tany Lions and Terrapins, the in- terstate connections run deep. Photo Steve Manuel BORDER BRAWL Against a familiar foe, Locksley leads Maryland for the first time For all the discussion about a rivalry when it comes to Maryland and Penn State – it is or it isn't – there's one thing that cannot be denied. On both sides of the football, the connections run deep. Penn State has nine players from Maryland, while 14 Terrapins hail from Penn- sylvania. Seven pairs of for- mer high school teammates will be on opposite sidelines Saturday, and the net- work doesn't stop there. Strength coach Dwight Galt graduated from Maryland before spending 22 years on its strength sta+. His sons, Dwight IV and Tommy, now assistants at PSU, are Terrapin alumni, too, hav- ing played for them from 2005- 09. In addition, o+ensive coordinator John Donovan spent 10 seasons as an assistant there, Charles Hu+ one. Per- haps the most notable tie comes between head coaches.
