ith his team slogging through its home
opener against Buffalo on a rainy Saturday
in September, Penn State defensive line
coach Sean Spencer managed to pause briefly. It
was a rare moment for Spencer, who says he has
only two speeds: fast forward, and off. But the
heavens above Beaver Stadium had caught his
attention, and as he looked up, the sheer size of
the rain drops pouring from the sky were enough
to elicit an unprompted, primal reaction.
"This is awesome!" he yelled.
Standing nearby, but outside Spencer's imme-
diate sphere of unbridled excitement, defensive
tackle Austin Johnson stared blankly. His position
