ceptions as a junior (three for 40 yards) and senior (six for 96 yards and a touch- down). Selecting Moore as the greatest may strike some as unreasonable when com- paring a glamorous halfback to a grunt lineman. It also may seem unfair to put more emphasis on the players who played both offense and defense that were the foun- dation of college football until unre- stricted substitution starting in 1966 made way for the modern-day specialists. So be it. There are a few linemen who would be contenders as the Nittany Lions' all-time best player, as well as several backs. At the top of the lineman list are Glenn Ressler and Mike Reid, who both won the Maxwell Award. Harry "Light Horse" Wilson, an All-American at both Penn State (1923) and Army (1926), ranks right behind Moore. All three are in the College Football Hall of Fame. Moore never will be because the No. 1 criteria for eligibility is being a first-team All-American. Unlike today, there were few qualified All-American teams back in the 1950s, and Moore was only a sec- ond-team choice in 1954 and 1955, pri- marily because the Penn State teams of that era were vastly underrated. However, Moore is just one of six Penn State players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the second one inducted (1975) after an All-Pro career as a run- ning back and receiver with the Balti- more Colts from 1956 to 1967. He is still 13th in the NFL records with 113 career touchdowns. The next time Penn State retires a jersey number it should be No. 42, worn by one of the greatest players in college football history. ■ A new Penn State football book by Lou Prato with a forward by Adam Taliaferro The Remarkable Journey of the 2012 Nittany Lions Published by Triumph Books (soft cover) Order now at Price: $14.95 plus shipping Autographed copies of Lou's book We Are Penn State: The Remarkable Journey of the 2012 Nittany Lions are still available via louprato@comcast.net or through Lou Prato & Associates at 814-272-1853.
