138 ■ THE WOLFPACKER Smith knows organizations will want him to play in all-star games next March and April, but he vows to stay the course and not rush back to the court, which he admits goes against his competitive nature. "Not getting a chance to win a cham- pionship bothers the competitor in me," Smith said. "I'm looking forward to col- lege now." He has met former NBA point guard Eric Maynor, who played at Fayetteville Terry Sanford High and Virginia Commonwealth, and star rapper J. Cole, who is also from that same high school. Smith has picked their brains in helping him with his own dreams. He loves his home area and knows others are looking up to him. "It means a lot to represent Fayetteville," Smith said. "We have J. Cole out there right now, and he's the main guy doing it for Fayetteville. He has endorsed me as the next guy. I also talk to Eric Maynor on the regular and he's a cool guy." Smith has attended Trinity Christian the last four years, and that has also helped him stay grounded. He figures there are only about 60-70 high school students at the school. The school serves grades K-12, and to most of the students, he's not "Dennis Smith Jr., basketball superstar." "I don't think they know too much of what is going on," Smith said. "They wouldn't know the difference between NC State and any other college. They just see me as a cool guy in a higher grade than them. I interact with all of them." Smith's interaction will grow by thou- sands next year at NC State, but it's a path he's ready to take. ■ Braswell Foods is a fourth generation family owned, vertically integrated company producing and marketing quality, value added feed and egg products for American families and businesses for over 45 years.
