PREP PROFILES Notre Dame's Mike Sanford has found his next target. Just three months after Brownsburg (Ind.) High five-star recruit Hunter Johnson — the top-ranked quarterback in the class of 2017 — picked Tennes- see over the Irish, Sanford spent Notre Dame's bye week s c o u t i n g q u a r t e r- backs. It didn't take the first-year offensive coordinator long to realize that Cedar Hill (Texas) High's Avery Davis is a talent that he wants in South Bend. Sanford offered the three-star prospect a scholarship Oct. 22 after watching him practice for just a few minutes. It was a bid that was greeted with a smile. "Coach Sanford came by to watch us in or normal pregame period. They had already liked him on film, but after watching him throw it around he said that he was just really excited and of- fered him on the spot." Cedar Hill head coach Joey McGuire said. "Avery's excited," McGuire added. "Shoot, I'm excited — it's Notre Dame." While Davis might not have as many stars next to his name as Johnson, there are strong reasons why he became the second quarterback offer in the class for the Irish. "I think what they really like is Av- ery's release," McGuire said. "It's quick and something that he continues to work on. Then when you got a dual- threat kid, he can create first downs with his feet, and I think that's really important for them. "Just seeing that on film, and then in person they liked h i m . H e ' s a b i g - ger kid than people think he is; he's al- m o s t 2 0 0 p o u n d s and a muscled-up joker. Coach Sanford was real excited." D a v i s , w h o i s ranked by Rivals as the No. 53 junior in Texas, has flown un- der the radar when it comes to the na- tional recruiting scene, but McGuire said there's a reason for that. The 5-11, 188-pound Davis spent last season at Cedar Hill backing up senior Justin McMillan, who went on to sign with LSU. "You got some really good 2017 quar- terbacks, and most of them got on the field before he did," McGuire said. "But I know he's excited about this. He's ex- cited about every offer, but this one is pretty cool because he knows that he can play at a school like Notre Dame." Davis accounted for 2,912 yards of total offense and 33 touchdowns in the first nine games of his junior season. — Andrew Ivins Irish Offer Texas Dual-Threat Junior Quarterback AVERY DAVIS ✪ ✪ ✪ Cedar Hill High School Cedar Hill, Texas Status: Offered Class: 2017 Position: Quarterback Ht.: 5-11 • Wt.: 188 40-Yard Dash: 4.6 Rivals Rankings: No. 53 player in Texas
