38 ■ THE WOLFPACKER modern world, the Wolverines had played three games on AXS, two on the Big Ten Network and one on Watch ESPN prior to playing at NC State. Barber watched some film while at Hampton (Va.) High, but he has had to learn how to incorporate it into his game. Figuring out how to use video as a tool is something the majority of players say is a big difference between high school and college. "I was familiar with watching film in high school, so it wasn't new to me," Bar- ber said. "The coaches can't see everything during the game, but film catches every- thing. It can fix those areas, so it won't happen again." Barber said he'll sometimes watch film on his own but will also dig into past bat- tles if it's a player he has history with in the ACC. Conversely, he looks to see what opposing point guards will try to take away against him. "They know what I like to do, so it's really about being a student of the game to see what your opponents like to do," Barber said. Barber said he knew absolutely nothing about Villanova point guard Ryan Arci- diacono after NCSU defeated LSU and the Pack learned they would face the top- seeded Wildcats during the NCAA Tour- nament last March. The 6-3, 195-pound Arcidiacano averaged 10.1 points and 3.6 assists per game, but Barber and Wolf- pack did a quality job shutting him down. Arcidiacono went 2 of 8 from the field (0 of 3 on three-pointers) for four points and added four assists in NC State's 71-68 upset victory. "I wanted to see where he liked to get the ball," Barber said of studying video of Arcidiacono. "I heard he liked to shoot the ball, so I wanted to see where he got his shots. I wanted to see where he liked to get his players the pass for shots, so I can play him different and disrupt that. It's more about picking out the spots from where he likes to shoot from. "It helped me in ways because he was not comfortable in doing things with his teammates. By me taking those things away, it messed him up a little bit." Barber added that when NC State played Notre Dame and junior point guard Deme- trius Jackson, he already had some work- ing knowledge of his opponent. The two played in the 2013 McDonald's All-Amer- ican Game together. NC State concludes the regular season at Notre Dame March 5, but Barber already knows he'll be ready thanks to how much the basketball world has changed over the years. "I know Demetrius likes to use ball screens, and he gets in the lane and fin- ishes well," Barber said. "I have to get over screens because he can shoot the ball, but sometimes I'll go under the ball screen because he has the ability to get to the rack. "I'll watch a lot of film of a lot of guys." ■ 3807 Peachtree Avenue Suite 200 Wilmington, NC 28403 P: 910.395.6036 F: 910.395.6605 www.mckinleybuilding.com McKinley Building Corporation Celebrating 20 Years Of Keeping Promises to Our Clients and Communities The Offices at Mayfaire I Wilmington, NC Alpha Academy Charter School Fayetteville, NC Junior point guard Anthony Barber believes watching film of Villanova's Ryan Arcidiacono prior to last year's game helped him hold the standout point guard to just four points.
