FROM OUR READERS Michigan, Northwestern, Wisconsin and many other Big Ten schools. Indeed, a certain school north of Ann Arbor that shall remain name- less (MSU) may be the only thing saving the Buckeyes from last place in the Big Ten academic standings. And so the Ohio school decided to upgrade its image, thereby creating a more prestigious institution. But did they follow traditional methods: i.e. raising admission standards, hiring superior profes- sors, upgrading libraries and other resources? No, instead they chose to add an article ("the") before the name of their institution. As if that act of vainglory has somehow al- tered the long-held perception that this is, at best, a mediocre school. I guess the thought was that the change would cause people to re- mark, "Why just look at that name — who knew that Cambridge West was located in Columbus, Ohio?" Despite their athletic success, these folks are to be pitied for their hopeless delusions and it's incum- bent upon us to bring them back to reality. I realize that I'm too late for the football season, but when the Buckeyes come to Ann Arbor to play basketball this winter, I entreat the faithful to carry signs saying, "Michigan welcomes duh Ohio State University." Harvey Dasho Walnut Creek, Calif. All well and good, Harvey. But for now, they're still smirking. • Are people really worried about who [Jim] Harbaugh is going to hire [for the vacant defensive coordinator position]? Of all the things to worry about, this is not it. We will have coaches come and go here at Michigan. Coaches WANT to come work for Harbaugh because it leads to greater possibilities so it's really not a big deal. He's going to hire a stellar staff and will have those guys go on to greater things. I'm not even remotely worried. This isn't your RichRod/Hoke/late Carr coaching tenures. There are options, and those options are going to be excel- lent. Get used to this. It's not a bad thing. Great organizations always have people hired away and replace them with equally great hires. It will be the same at Michigan. rrajani • Nope. Not worried. Harbaugh will have a Bo-like coaching tree by the time he's done. pyc From Our Website
