ND SPORTS BY JORDAN WELLS N otre Dame hockey saved its best for last to end the fall semester. The No. 18 Irish defeated No. 3 Bos- ton College 4-3 Dec. 10 on the road to notch their fourth consecutive win, scoring three goals in the final period to emerge with the massive comeback victory. Boston College tallied two goals in the early minutes of the final period, taking a comfortable 3-1 lead with 13 minutes remaining in the contest. The Irish countered with goals at the 8:33 and 15:26 marks to tie the game, though, and freshman defenseman Dennis Gilbert scored his second goal of the season with 22 seconds remain- ing in regulation to put the Irish ahead for good, snapping Boston College's 13-game winning streak. The 2014-15 USHL All-Rookie first-team performer picked up Hockey East Warrior Player of the Week honors for his clutch score. The win showed progress for a team that was 0-2-1 in its three matchups against top-10 competition earlier in the season. The Irish tied the first game 2-2 and fell 3-1 in the second of a two- game series at then-No. 5 UMass Low- ell Nov. 20-21, and dropped a home contest to No. 8 Harvard 4-1 Nov. 27. "I can't say enough about the re- solve of our guys, not giving up after they [Boston College] scored those two quick goals in the third," head coach Jeff Jackson told UND.com. "There's no question that was a signature win for us to close the first half. "We've had a chance to play top teams like UMass Lowell and Har- vard, and now Boston College, so to get the win was a good chance to prove that we can compete with top teams and that we are a top team. We just have to play at that level moving forward." The Irish don't return to the ice un- til New Year's Day. In the meantime, some of the Notre Dame standouts will stay busy during their break.
