M . | D E C . 3 0 | C O L L E G E P A R K , M D . | E S P N 2 As expected given their abundant youth, the Nittany Lions have had an up-and-down nonconference season, following up victories over VMI and DePaul with losses to Duquesne and Radford. The start of the Big Ten season brings with it an even bigger challenge for a Penn State team whose starting lineup features three sophomores, one freshman and only one senior. In recent years, the Lions have gotten o. to slow starts in conference play. How slow? In each of the past two seasons, they've opened with six consecutive losses. Whether they'll be able to change their fortunes this season will likely depend on how quickly their young players – freshman guard Josh Reaves, soph- omore guard Shep Garner and sophomore forwards Payton Banks and Julian Moore – are able to adapt to the rigors of league play. This much is certain: The Lions couldn't have drawn a much tougher opponent for their Big Ten opener. Led by sophomore guard Melo Trimble and junior forward Robert Carter, the Terrapins have been ranked as high as second in the Associated Press poll. It'll be awfully tough to pull out a win at the XFINITY Center, but at the very least, a learning experience awaits. – M.H. SCORECARD
