A
t a recent media event in Jacksonville pro-
moting the TaxSlayer Bowl, the opposing
head coaches, Penn State's James Franklin
and Georgia's Bryan McClendon, were asked
what first comes to mind when they think about
each other's programs. It was an invitation to
trade compliments, and they happily obliged,
talking in generalities about things like excellence
and consistency and fundamentals.
But after hailing the Bulldogs' long football
tradition, Franklin got specific.
"The other thing that jumps into my mind,"
he said, "is Herschel Walker. I'm glad he won't
be playing in the game."
That's entirely understandable. Walker led the
Bulldogs to the national championship as a fresh-
man All-American in 1980 and won the Heisman
Trophy two years later. He rushed for 102 yards
against Penn State in the 1983 Sugar Bowl, albeit
in a losing effort, and he's surely the one Georgia
player everyone knows, no matter how discon-
nected they may be from Bulldog Nation.
