MICHIGAN HOCKEY is probably matching up with Max's and Dexter's." Giving more ice time to Nieves, Connor or junior Alex Kile certainly helps, but the usual fourth liners are making a name for themselves. Dancs had five goals and four assists in the last 10 games (and was plus‑7), while Shuart contributed a goal and six assists (and was plus‑4). Dancs, especially, has proven valu‑ able. He scored U‑M's first goal against Michigan State Jan. 9, erasing a 1‑0 deficit late in the first period of an eventual 5‑3 win. He also scored the Wolverines' first goal against Wisconsin Dec. 4, put‑ ting Michigan on the board when it had trailed 3‑0 in a contest the Maize and Blue went on to win 6‑4. Then, the sophomore put Michigan ahead 2‑1 versus Minnesota in an 8‑3 HOCKEY REWIND: DEC. 6-JAN. 17 Record: 14-3-4 (5-1-1 Big Ten) Record Dec. 6-Jan. 17: 5-0-1 (3-0-1 Big Ten) Best Win — 4-2 vs. Michigan Tech, Dec. 30: There were plenty to choose from, including a 9-2 throttling of rival Michigan State Jan. 8, but the Wolver- ines claimed the Great Lakes Invitational title over Michigan Tech and did so without their top two defensemen — sophomore Zach Werenski and junior Michael Downing. Playing with five, and sometimes four, defenders, U-M fell behind 2-0. How- ever, the Maize and Blue rallied with three goals in the second period, sopho- more Tony Calderone putting the Wolverines on the board and junior Alex Kile netting the game-winner. With the win, Michigan claimed the GLI for the second straight year and the fourth time in the past six years. Worst Loss — 5-5 tie (shootout loss) at Ohio State, Jan. 15: Technically, this one goes down as a tie, but the Maize and Blue ceded the extra point awarded for a shootout win by losing 3-2 after nine rounds of breakaways. Even worse, Michigan led 5-4 after taking the lead with 1:34 remaining in the third period and had a chance to clinch the game, but a shot at an empty net sailed wide, leading to an icing call and a defensive zone faceoff. With eight seconds remaining, OSU won the draw and Buckeye Anthony Greco whistled a shot past goalie Steve Racine for the tie. In a Big Ten race that has Michigan and Minnesota neck-and-neck with 18 points apiece, the two points U-M forfeited in those final eight seconds could haunt the Maize and Blue. Quote: "There was a little bit of chaos, a little bit of skill. We just happened to put some pucks in the net. We came out of the locker room with fire. Once we got a few on the power play, we were just rolling." — Junior forward Tyler Motte on the five-goal third period Michigan had in a 8-6 win over Ohio State Jan. 17.
