And it helped him realize something else. McGovern was still wrapping his mind around the fact that he was a four-star national recruit; he had never considered graduating high school early in order to get a jump start on his college career. Dur- ing a visit to Duke, however, an assistant coach suggested to McGovern that he might qualify to enroll for the spring se- mester instead of waiting until the fall. "While he never showed much interest in Duke, the concept stuck with him," said Jim McGovern, who is also superin- tendent of the Lake-Lehman School Dis- trict. "So we had to sit down. We talked at the Lasch Bash with [PSU strength and conditioning coach Dwight Galt], and Coach Galt thought it would be a won- derful idea if he was a good candidate." With his 3.7 grade point average and most of his core courses completed by the end of his junior year, McGovern un- dertook a heavy class load this past fall, ful-lling all the requirements. He received his diploma Dec. 23. "If I would have stayed in high school, I would have had seven study halls a day," McGovern said. "So I decided to get to Penn State early to have more of an aca- demic challenge." He's hoping to get a head start on his playing career, as well. He likely won't be throwing any passes in college, but he still wants his impact to be memorable. He participated in the U.S. Army All- America Bowl Jan. 9 in San Antonio and was enrolled in classes when Penn State's spring semester began two days later. ■
