Sherando * As of Jan. 17 New year brings mixed results Mathews joins class in January, but Lions also lose a key prospect P enn State's entire football program has been through some ups and downs in recent weeks, and that in- cludes its recruiting e4orts. While the Nittany Lion sta4 was able to pick up a solid commitment from athlete Aaron Mathews of Clairton, Pa., it also su4ered a big loss, as Philadelphia defensive tackle Karamo Dioubate announced that he was backing out of his verbal commit- ment. In addition, as of this writing, several other committed players revealed that they were planning to take at least one or two o5cial visits to other schools. Mathews made his commitment on Jan. 2, just hours a6er Penn State had wrapped up its season against Georgia in the Tax- Slayer Bowl. A three-star prospect, he had been high on the sta4's recruiting board since the spring, but it wasn't until Dec. 27 that he actually landed an o4er from head coach James Franklin. During the past two seasons, he earned 14 scholarship o4ers, but he was focused on Pitt, West Virginia and Toledo before receiving Penn State's o4er. At 6-foot-4, 188 pounds, he has the frame to potentially play wide receiver, but he's expected to start his career on defense at the "star" position, which combines elements of the outside linebacker and safety spots. During his senior season, Mathews played quar- terback for Clairton, leading the Bears to a 14-1 record. He's a high school teammate of Lamont Wade, a 3ve-star athlete in the Class of 2017. However, since Mathews' commitment, the news has been mostly negative for the Nittany Lions. Dioubate's decommitment wasn't a complete surprise, as he had made an o5cial visit to Auburn in December and VERBAL COMMITMENTS* F O O T B A L L R E C R U I T I N G |
