HEAD COACH
KEVIN SAUER
CAVALIER CORNER: You graduated
from Purdue with a bachelor's degree
in marketing and finance. Why did you
become a rowing coach instead of pursu-
ing a career for example on Wall Street?
SAUER: "I worked in the insurance
business for a couple of months and
didn't like it, but I was still training for
the national team.
"I went back to Purdue to get a teach-
er's degree and got back into rowing.
They offered me the head coaching job
at Purdue in 1978."
CAVALIER CORNER: The Virginia
rowing program was one of the Stan
Musial Award winners for extraordinary
sportsmanship. What enabled your pro-
gram to receive this prestigious award?
SAUER: "Bates lost its equipment on
the trip to California. We had an extra
boat, which was exactly the same type
they used. We let them use it and they
won the NCAA Division III champion-
ship."
CAVALIER CORNER: What do you
think was more difficult — winning the
2010 national championship or repeating
as national champion, and why?
SAUER: "Winning the first one be-
cause we had come so close before.
