FOOTBALL RECRUITING ROUNDUP Recruiting Notes • It didn't take long for Notre Dame's focus on the recruiting trail to shift from the class of 2016 to the class of 2017. Just a few hours after the Irish received all 23 letters of intent from its 2016 commits on National Signing Day Feb. 3, the coaches were on the phones with some of the country's top juniors, handing out scholarship offers. Notre Dame extended bids to Redlands (Calif.) East Valley four-star defensive end Jaelan Phillips, Fontana (Calif.) Summit four-star running back Stephen Carr and Atlanta Pace Academy four-star wide receiver Trey Blount. Phillips, who is ranked by Rivals as the No. 13 defensive end and No. 189 overall prospect in the country, said Irish offensive coordinator Mike Sanford told him to give him a call, so he obliged. "He just messaged me saying that he and the other coaches had something special for me," Phillips said. "Then I was on the phone with all of them, and they offered, which was cool." Carr, who is committed to USC, has been in contact with Sanford for the better part of the past few months, but like with Phillips, he was eager to get the bid. "It means a lot," the nation's No. 2 all-purpose back and No. 34 overall recruit said. "I like Coach Sanford. I think he's good coach and a good coordinator." Blount, who is listed as the No. 27 prospect in Georgia and No. 41 wide receiver in the country, visited Notre Dame during the season. He said that while he lives in the heart of SEC country, he wants to con- sider the Irish moving forward. "I'm open to go anywhere that's the best fit for me," Blount said.
