THEY SAID IT • Head coach Brian Kelly (courtesy UND.com): "Ian possesses several of the traits every coach wants in their quarterback: he's confident, is a leader and is a flat-out competitor. Coach [Mike] Sanford is adding a special young man to the QB unit with the addition of Ian." • Offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Mike Sanford: "I'll be perfectly honest. Myself and Coach [Mike] Denbrock and Coach [Brian] Kelly in evaluating that position, we don't care about the big name — at all. We care about the fit for the University of Notre Dame and the fit for our quarterback group. "We're looking for the best football player that fits our needs, and we think we found the best fit and the best player at quarterback in the 2016 quarterback class." • BGI football analyst Bryan Driskell: "Book is a high-IQ player with strong fundamentals and a great understanding of how to play the position. He keeps a good base in the pocket and stays light on his feet, which allows him to maneuver with ease in the pocket. "He is an accurate passer with a quick release, sound footwork and a great understanding of ball placement. He gets good zip on the ball on short to intermediate routes and throws well on the run. He displays good touch on the deep ball, but lacks the downfield power of the current Irish quarterbacks."
