WHAT
HE DID
A@er graduating in 2012 from Varina (Va.)
High School, where he was a standout on the o>ensive and
defensive lines, Chavis spent a year at Fork Union Military
Academy to shore up his grades before enrolling at Virginia.
Following a redshirt season under then-coach Mike London,
Chavis transferred to Nassau Community College in Garden
City, N.Y., where he spent the next two seasons. In eight
games last fall, he recorded 39 tackles, including 12 tackles
for loss and six sacks.
WHAT HE WON Chavis is listed as a three-star recruit by Ri-
vals.com. He won ers from everybody in the coun-
try, and being able to get an older guy like that on board with
us was signiered a sprained medial collateral
ligament midway through the year. He was forced to miss the
team's ered were Ari-
zona State, Duke, Iowa, Michigan State, North Carolina, Notre
Dame, Pitt, USC, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin. He visited
Duke, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Pitt and Virginia Tech,
but he eventually narrowed his list to Penn State and Pitt. He
made a second visit to Pittsburgh in June but committed to
PSU during the Lasch Bash barbecue on July 18.
QUOTABLE Brown: "It was a really close decision. I was
talking to Pitt a lot, but at the end of the day, when you look
at the degree, the social life and just everything outside of
football, I was more comfortable with Penn State."
STAFF SAYS Terry Smith: "We've got some [linebackers]
who will be back [from injury] for the season and hopefully
be back for spring ball. We've got a good rotation of ective outside pass rusher. He
will most likely be redshirted in 2016.
