He twice played for the Brewers as a player and after retiring joined their front office. He was named manager one month into the 2015 season when Ron Roenicke was fired. PAT MURPHY (BENCH COACH, MILWAUKEE BREWERS) After the Brewers named Counsell their manager last May, they wanted to interview Murphy to join their staff. Murphy's employer at the time, the San Diego Padres, declined and later named him their interim manager that summer. This past offseason, San Diego de‑ cided not to renew Murphy's contract and Counsell and the Brewers imme‑ diately hired him. Murphy coached Notre Dame from 1988‑94. "We've had a 25‑year baseball con‑ versation," Counsell said.
