PAUL, MINN. M A R C H 1 7 - 1 9 | X C E L E N E R G Y C E N T E R | B T N The Big Ten tournament is now in its third year, and although Penn State's varsity pro- gram only predates the league's championship event by one year, the Nittany Lions are starting to gain some ground on their more-established rivals. Heading into their regu- lar-season-ending series at Michigan, they were ranked 14th in the USCHO.com poll and were in third place in the conference standings. One of the key components of the Lions' success throughout their short varsity history has been the sizeable home-ice advantage they've enjoyed at Pegula Ice Arena. They went 12-4-1 at home this year, knowing that they could count on a raucous sellout crowd to keep opponents rattled night a/er night. That won't be the case at the Big Ten tourney, of course. The Xcel En- ergy Center, home to the NHL's Minnesota Wild, is less than 8 miles from the Universi- ty of Minnesota campus, so the home-ice edge will go to the .rst-place Gophers. But the Nittany Lions are optimistic that they can improve on last year's one-and-done .nish at the tournament. And a/er putting together their winningest regular season yet, those hopes seem entirely justi.ed. – M.H. SCORECARD
