There is, a/er all, no guarantee that the host team will get to participate in this year's event. That said, it's a short leap. The Nittany Lions may not be guaranteed a berth, but they've made 17 consecutive appearances in the NCAA tourney, so their history would lead you to believe they've got a pretty good shot. Paced by Chris Nugent, who was ninth nationally in points per set as of late March (4.65), and Matt Callaway, who was 17th in blocks per set (1.09), Penn State was ranked 11th in the country and was on track to claim the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association championship for the 18th consecutive season. The EIVA tournament champ gets one of four automatic berths in the six-team NCAA .eld. Two additional teams will receive at-large bids, with the four lowest-seeded teams taking part in .rst-round games. The top two seeds receive byes into the semi.nals. Should Penn State make the .eld, it would be an extreme long shot to get one of those coveted byes. But having the home court advantage would make for a very nice consolation prize. – M.H.
