BASKETBALL RECRUITING MICHIGAN STILL WATCHING JUNIOR GUARD Bridgeport (W.Va.) Notre Dame's Jarrod West Jr. remains under the ra‑ dar, a 5‑10, 175‑pounder who put up big numbers as a junior. He averaged more than 26 points per game and is on Michigan's watch list. Beilein's son, Pat — now the head coach at LeMoyne — first made his father aware of West while he was coaching at West Virginia Wesleyan. U‑M has continued to watch him since. "When I got offered by Marshall, that's when it all started," West said. "They've shown pretty good interest. Coach Beilein came to see me; Coach [Jeff] Meyer came to watch me work out and has seen me two or three times. "I've been on two visits there. I went and saw them play Iowa and have been on campus twice … it's my dream school. I'd love to play there. When they called, I was ex‑ cited for the opportunity." West said he's "one of two or three point guards they're recruiting in my class," adding the Michigan coaches have been straightforward with him about that. Vanderbilt and Florida are among the other schools that have been watching him. Liberty, East Carolina and Winthrop have offered in addi‑ tion to Marshall. Michigan, though, remains No. 1 on his list. "Ever since seventh or eighth grade I really started watching them play offense. I really like the way they play, and develop their play‑ ers," he said. Rivals.com's Jacey Zembal caught him in action at his first AAU Tour‑ nament of the spring season. "He's a pass‑first point guard who can make open jumpers and is on a team where he can elevate the play around him," Zembal said. "He's surrounded by quality shooters and understands how to keep everyone happy." U‑M coaches have told them they'd like to see more of him this spring and summer before deciding whether to offer. ❏ On The Web For regular reports on basketball recruiting, plus videos of all the top prospects in the nation and Michigan's commitments, visit TheWolverine.com.
