The Irish haven't had much success in recent years recruit- ing the Pittsburgh area, but Notre Dame sent five coaches — including head coach Brian Kelly — to watch a Central Catholic playoff game the night before the Pittsburgh game last season. Recruiting coordinator and linebackers coach Mike Elston fell in love with what he saw in Adams, who starred in the middle of the de- fense and was consistently in the op- posing offense's backfield. "Notre Dame made me feel like a big priority," Adams said. "Coach Elston told me I was their No. 1 line- backer recruit in the class. "It's every kid's dream to have a bunch of college coaches at their high school game," he said looking back on the night the Irish watched him play. "It made me feel wanted, and I really appreciated them coming." The 6-2, 225-pound Adams, who was named to the Pennsylvania Foot- ball Writers' Class 4A All-State first- team defense this past season, also held scholarship offers from Michi- gan, Michigan State, Penn State, Stan- ford, Wisconsin, Baylor and Florida. He has played multiple roles at Central Catholic, but projects as a Mike linebacker at Notre Dame in the mold of ex-Irish linebacker Joe Schmidt, who had a knack of stop- ping the run. "Adams is a big-time hitter in the center of the defense," Rivals recruit- ing analyst Adam Friedman said. "He really knows how to quickly re- act to the play, see the running lanes and take off. He delivers the blow when he gets to the ball carrier."
