72 ■ THE WOLFPACKER ■ PACK PAST Company, Pepsi Bottling Company, Seven-Up Bottling Company and the Pine State Creamery all gave a little, as did Happy Jack Dog Remedy. Competing J.C. Penney and Sears Roebuck gave offsetting contributions. "When we undertook this difficult job many people said it couldn't be done," said Clogston, the Wolfpack's longtime athletics director. "But Walker did it. He's been the driving force behind the entire fundraising for Carter Stadium." Martin remained modest about his ef- forts, spreading credit to the rest of the committee and the individuals who gave their treasure to the project. "The Stadium Development Committee, and its colonels, captains and workers, has worked with diligence and determination in getting North Carolina State University this stadium," Walker said. "It has been a team effort, just as in football. "A special salute should go to the mem- bers of the Stadium Development Com- mittee that have made my chairmanship one of the most satisfying adventures I've ever undertaken." Walker kept giving to the university long after the first football game was played at Carter Stadium. His personal foundation set up scholarships that helped nearly two dozen students per year attend NC State. He served eight years as a mem- ber of the Consolidated University Board of Governors. In 1976, Martin and A.E. Finley — the Raleigh philanthropist who is recognized in the second half of the stadium's name — were among the second recipients of the Watauga Medal, NC State's highest non-academic award. Martin died on Dec. 21, 1985, at the age of 89. He is buried in Lexington, N.C., hometown of his wife. While Finley's name lives on through his financial contributions, Walker's name has faded into the façade like the thou- sands of others who gave lasting contribu- tions to a worthwhile project. However, the Wolfpack family remains ever grateful. ■ Wake Stone Corporation Five convenient locations to serve you with crushed stone: triangle Quarry Moncure Quarry I-40 at Harrison Ave. US 1 at Deep River 919-677-0050 919-755-7349 knightdale Quarry Hwy. 64 East 919-266-9266 nash Co.
