The Nittany Lions have gotten o8 to a rousing start in Big Ten play, winning 7ve of their 7rst six league series to set a school record for most series victories in a season. A potent o8ense has been one of the key factors in their success, with seniors Macy Jones (.401) and Lexi Knief (.376) both ranked among the Big Ten's top 10 in batting average. Fans have been taking notice. On Blue-White weekend, Nittany Lion So9ball Park played host to its 7rst-ever sellouts, as crowds of 1,100 showed up on Saturday and Sunday to see the Lions complete a three-game sweep of Maryland. "It's amazing," third-year coach Amanda Lehotak said following a 5-3 victory over the Terps on April 17. "If I could write a personal letter of thanks to the fans, I would. ... Our kids work really hard and most of their games are away from here, so for the fans who come out and support them and celebrate what they do, it was pretty special." Penn State will be looking to give those fans even more to cheer about in May when the league tourney comes to University Park. – M.H. SCORECARD AWARDS Eckerstrom, Megaludis named McCoy winners Seniors Britt Eckerstrom and Nico Megaludis have been selected the 2015- 16 Ernest B. McCoy Memorial Award winners. They were recognized at the Penn State Student Awards ceremony April 2 at Eisenhower Auditorium. The tandem helped lead Penn State to NCAA championships in women's soccer and wrestling, respectively, in 2015-16. The McCoy Award has been present- ed annually since 1971 to one senior fe- male and one senior male student-ath- lete who have combined successful athletic participation with academic excellence. The award is named for Ernie McCoy, the longtime dean of Penn State's College of Physical Educa- tion, who also served as the university's athletic director. Eckerstrom, a Germantown, Md., res- ident, capped her PSU career by playing a crucial role in the team's NCAA title run. During her senior season, she started all 27 matches, tallying a record of 22-3-2, which included 15 shutouts. She and the Nittany Lion defense ended the season with eight consecutive shutouts. The Lions did not allow a goal over the final 733 minutes, 32 seconds of the season, and during that span, Eckerstrom played all but 19:23 in net. A geography major, she earned a 3.64 grade-point average. Megaludis became the wrestling pro- gram's ninth four-time All-American and won the 125-pound national championship. His first individual title helped spark the team to its fifth NCAA title in the past six years. A finance major from Murrysville, Pa., Megaludis recently earned his third Academic All-Big Ten honor and is a two-time first-team NWCA Na- tional All-Academic selection (with this year's honors to be announced). ■
