UNDER THE DOME For the second straight season, Notre Dame will play two night games at home. It is the first time in its history the university will host two night contests at home in consecutive years. The university has announced the Sept. 17 Michigan State and Oct. 15 Stanford showdowns will kick off at 7:30 p.m. EDT. The Spartans made the inaugural four-team College Football Playoff last season and finished No. 6 in the Associated Press poll with a 12-2 record. The Cardinal also was 12-2, but finished No. 3 — its highest placement since No. 2 in 1940. Last year Notre Dame's two mar- quee, big-name o p p o n e n t s a t home also were moved to night: t h e 3 8 - 3 v i c - tory versus Texas i n t h e s e a s o n opener and the 41-31 conquest of archrival USC in October. W h e n N o t r e Dame signed its nationally tele- vised home game deal with NBC t h at b e ga n i n 1991, it went 20 straight years without a home night game from 1991-2010. That ended in 2011 with a 31-17 loss at home to USC. The Fighting Irish then continued to play one night game at home per year in 2012 (13-6 win versus Michigan), 2013 (14-10 victory against USC) and 2014 (31-0 whitewash of Michigan). During that time, Notre Dame agreed with NBC to play five home night games — including the off-site Shamrock Series game, such as last year versus Boston College in Fenway Park — over a two-year period. For the first time since the start of the Shamrock Series in 2009, the Irish will kick off that outing during afternoon hours.
