IRISH ANALYTICS BRIAN FREMEAU T he 2016 Blue-Gold Game was anything but a high-scoring af- fair featuring an onslaught of highlight-reel plays. The 17-7 scrim- mage was so vanilla, punter Tyler Newsome was crowned MVP of the game. The junior kicked for both sides and booted seven punts on the day for a total of 369 yards, an average of 52.7 yards per punt. That was more than eight yards further per punt than his 2015 average — and he ranked among the top 20 punters in the nation in average yards per punt (44.5) as a sophomore. Most fans would cringe at the thought of Newsome stealing the Punter An Unsung Weapon For Irish Tyler Newsome excelled at pinning opponents deep in their own territory in 2015, dropping 38.0 percent of his punts inside the 20-yard line and 18.0 percent inside the 10 (which ranked 18th nationally).
