that it is something many fans would like to see happen. At the appropriate time this is a topic that can and should be discussed fur- ther." ADMINISTRATION Penn State fires athletics official Mark Sherburne, a senior athletic official who in November briefly took over as the university's athletic director, was fired April 18. Current Penn State athletic direc- tor Dave Joyner declined to com- ment on Sherburne's dismissal, calling it a human resources issue. "Our policies are that we don't dis- cuss HR issues," he said. However, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Sherburne was found to be in possession of documents pertain- ing to the perjury charges against former athletic director Tim Curley. The Inquirer's report did not describe the content of the docu- ments, but they have since been AWARDS WATCH by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Paterno's son, Jay Paterno, will accept the honor on his family's behalf as part of the third annual Capital One Special Awards Gala on June 25 at CoSIDA's annual convention in St. Louis, Mo. Paterno was voted the recipient of the Dick Enberg Award by CoSIDA's Special Awards Committee in March 2011 but was unable to attend last summer's workshop in Marco Island, Fla., to receive the honor. He was planning to appear at this year's event in St. Louis before passing away in January after a battle with lung cancer. During Paterno's tenure, Penn State had 79 first-team All-Americans, 16 National Football Foundation Scholar- Athletes, 37 first-team Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans (47 overall) and 18 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. … Penn State's Randy Jepson was honored as 2012 Central Region Coach of the Year at the NCAA/CGA Men's Gymnastics Awards Banquet in Norman, Okla. In addition, senior Miguel Pineda was recognized as a Nissen-Emery Award finalist. … Senior men's volleyball player Joe Sunder was named a second-team All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. This is Sunder's second career award and brings Penn State's total number of All-Americans to 79 since 1971. J PATERNO W W W . B L U E W H I T E O N L I N E . C O M oe Paterno will be posthumously honored as the recipient of the 2012 Dick Enberg Award, presented turned over to the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office. Penn State officials have told staff members to turn over any docu- ments that could be pertinent to the perjury investigation of Curley and former vice president Gary Schultz and the sexual assault case against former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. It was not clear why Sherburne had the documents in his posses- sion, but the Inquirer reported that there was no indication he was intentionally concealing the items from investigators. As of this writing, the only univer- sity official to address Sherburne's firing was Joyner, who was asked about it at the groundbreaking cer- emony for the Pegula Ice Arena on April 20. When asked if the university's silence on the issue was consistent with its new openness policy, Joyner replied, "Openness doesn't mean you can violate your confi- dentiality policies, and it's well- accepted that HR policies are confi- dential. It's not just about being open. It's just about [not violating] our own HR policies." T H E W E E K I N . . . BLOGS It's no secret that Penn State has struggled with season ticket sales since the implementation of STEP, as evidenced by the holes in the crowd this past season. It looks like IMG [College Ticket Solutions] decided to take a more aggressive approach at the Blue-White game by posting fliers on every few rows of bleachers in each section adver- tising season ticket availability. Great to see them being proactive about filling the seats, but very telling about the fan base right now in the post-STEP and post-scandal world. JOHN TECCE NITTANY LIONS DEN OPINIONS Saturday was about Penn State football. Present and future, not past. That point was driven home in the official 2012 Spring Football Guide. Inside a two-paragraph men- tion of Paterno's passing on page 1 and a 26-line biography in the "Hall of Fame" section, the same length as bios for John Cappelletti and Curt Warner. In the "All-America" sec- tion, the bio of the legendary Jimmy Kennedy ran one line shorter than Paterno's, while both Larry Johnson Jr. and Kerry Collins got more ink than their former coach. There were three Paterno pics, one a full-pager, plus very small mentions elsewhere in the 180 pages. Clearly, Penn State has tried to move on. MIKE POORMAN STATECOLLEGE.COM Of the three [quarterbacks], Jones is the most exciting. He's got a rocket arm, evidenced by his ability to roll left and throw right, a difficult pass for a righthanded QB. But Jones did it several times en route to a 113-yard day on 6- for-15 passing, including a touchdown. NEIL RUDEL ALTOONA MIRROR Sometime soon the coach is going to make a call. The con- tender list has to drop from three to two come August. And O'Brien still needs to take a look at incoming freshman QB Steven Bench. So he can't give first-team reps to three guys. One of them has to step aside. Now that spring is over, it sure looks like Bolden is that guy. "We've asked a lot of them," O'Brien said of his QBs. "We've asked them to learn a system that's totally different than anything they've ever learned. And that takes time." Time? Judging by Saturday's effort, it is running out on Bolden. BOB FLOUNDERS THE (HARRISBURG) PATRIOT-NEWS QUOTES We're not re-inventing the wheel. It's just that what may have been called apples, are now called oranges. We're doing some experimenting with a couple of things, and, as a coach, one of the goals going into spring ball was finding out who we are. What can we do well? Because I think good coaches figure out what their players can do and then adjust their job description based on that. TED ROOF FOLLOWING THE BLUE-WHITE GAME J U N E 1 , 2 0 1 2 7
