WILLIAMS FROM PREVIOUS PAGE division schools. Toledo and West Vir- ginia were particularly interested in him, extending scholarship offers be- fore the start of his senior year. By the end of July, he figured he had waited long enough and decided to ac- cept the Mountaineers' offer. No other offers had come through, al- though Penn State was showing inter- est. So Williams decided to join two of his friends in Morgantown, one of them being another future Nittany Lion re- cruit Da'Quan Davis. The West Virginia coaching staff re- cruited Williams as an athlete in the hope of starting him out on the defen- sive side of the ball. But while he said he would play wherever his coaches wanted him, Williams – and Redd – thought he would be better off playing on offense in college, specifically the slot receiver position. Williams enjoyed a great senior sea- son as a wideout at Calvert Hall, THE WILLIAMS FILE S T A T I S T I C S Finished with 99 catches for 1,180 yards and 15 touch- downs as a senior at Calvert Hall High School. ... On Jan. 17, assistant coaches Larry Johnson, Stan Hixon and John But- ler tendered in-person scholarship offers to both Williams and his team- mate Davis. A week before the Nittany Lions made their offer, three West Virginia coaches chose to leave the school for new coach- ing positions at Arizona. Their departure, coupled with Penn State's offer, persuad- ed Williams to reopen his recruitment. Five days later – on the day of Joe Pa- terno's passing – he decided to join the Nittany Lions. At last. "I've always wanted to go to Penn catching 99 passes for 1,180 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also had a couple of special teams touchdowns and built a reputation as a formidable blocker, as well. "He doesn't mind blocking. He does- n't mind catching the ball across the middle of the field," Redd said. "He's just a pro-style wide receiver. Most of all, he's just a good kid. He has good State," Williams said. "It was always a dream of mine, and when I finally had the opportunity to visit Beaver Stadi- um, I was just blown away. "Plus, Coach Johnson made me feel like I was already on the team. I just felt something there that I just didn't feel at West Virginia."
