SPRING FOOTBALL WRAP | PENN STATE VS. HOUSTON sparring. First, he's the coach. Sec- ond, it's his offense. A season ago, the New England Patriots used a more complex ver- sion of that offense to reach the Su- per Bowl. Their success has given rise to hopes that, with enough time and the right personnel, Penn State will be able to shrug off the lethargy that last season led the team to fin- ish eighth or lower in the Big Ten in five major offensive statistical cate- gories. Do they have that personnel? It's hard to say after only 15 practices. Following the Blue-White Game, O'Brien prefaced his appraisal of McGloin, Bolden and Paul Jones by saying he needed to look at the game film. He said he felt "pretty good" about the team's quarterback situation, noting that the three leaders have had a challenging few months as they've worked to learn a new playbook a little at a time. "We've asked a lot of them," O'Brien said. "We've asked them to learn a system that's totally differ- ent than anything they've ever learned, and that takes time. And different guys learn at different rates. Some guys get it right away, other guys get it the next day, other guys get it two days from now. So we have to let it soak in a little bit, let it soak in for ourselves as a staff, and then we'll make a decision headed into training camp on who we're going with or who the top two are." Accustomed to battling for the starting quarterback position – he's already won it twice from Bolden – McGloin didn't flinch when he was asked after the game about having to apply for the job all over again. "I really don't even care," he said. "I've been battling since I got here, so you kind of get used to it. I'm kind of happy about it, too. You can't slack off at all during practice. If you feel like you're the starter, you can't get comfortable with that. I like having someone pushing me." McGloin completed 6 of 13 passes for 105 yards in the Blue-White Game, with a touchdown and an in- terception. His competitors fared about the same. Jones led the team W W W .
