T H E M O N T H I N . . . In the latest statement of revenue mandated by the U.S. Department of Educa- tion for the fiscal year ending almost exactly a year ago (06/30/15), Penn State football finished with a revenues-over-expenses figure of $36,158,596. ... Even after all of the "not-allocated expenses" and salaries and recruiting trips and student aid, the entire PSU athletic department announced a profit of $3,449,212. This is the business that's telling you it simply cannot afford any- more to give away free parking to fans so devoted that they would flock to a spring scrimmage, many of them unable to scrounge the means to attend an ac- tual game against another school in the fall. DAVID JONES PENNLIVE.COM True, a few stalwarts remain, like the head athletic trainer, the lead academic ad- viser and the top video guy. But just about everything and everyone else has swiftly changed with Penn State football, from the sanctions being levied to them being lifted, from the turf in Holuba Hall to the inside décor and inner workings of Lasch Building. The journey has paid off in a number of ways for those seven super-seniors. As they helped change the program, they've built a reservoir of in- ner strength and also buttressed their bank accounts. Unlike when they arrived back in 2012, each scholarship athlete now gets $4,788 in annual "cost of atten- dance" checks. So you can get what Franklin is saying when he puts it out there that 2016 is "Year One in a lot of ways for us." MIKE POORMAN STATECOLLEGE.COM As a true freshman, Barkley tried to break our elusive rating scale in the first half of the season before settling in at 126.7, the highest number for any runner with at least 90 carries over the last two seasons. He forced 60 missed tackles on only 182 carries while averaging 3.82 yards after contact per rush, good for seventh in the FBS. STEVE PALAZZOLO PRO FOOTBALL FOCUS O P I N I O N S MEN'S BASKETBALL Nittany Lions receive first 2018 commitment Penn State's Class of 2018 is o:cially under way, as point guard Myles Dread of Gonzaga High in Washington, D.C., an- nounced on July 10 that he intends to play for the Nittany Lions. A 6-foot-4 1 ⁄2, 200-pound junior-to-be, Dread revealed his plans via Twitter a;er coach Patrick Chambers and his sta9 made a major push beginning in mid-June. "They contacted me more than any- body by far," Dread said. "They came to watch me at Peach Jam, and since we started talking on the phone, our rela- tionship just became closer and closer. I went on a visit June 27, and me and Coach Chambers just hit it o9 right away. It was de8nitely exciting." During the visit, Dread said that in ad- dition to the direction of the basketball program, he was impressed with the ac- ademic opportunities PSU o9ered. "Penn State has an absolutely amazing academic program. My whole family went up to Penn State and talked to the academic advisor for the basketball team, and she told us how serious she was about academics and getting her guys right, and how dedicated you have to be to be successful with Penn State academ- ics. That very much intrigued me," he said. "Then a;er that, I visited the cam- pus. It was huge, people everywhere, it was very diverse. And then I got to talk to the players. They were really down-to- earth, really a good group of guys." A big guard who prides himself on being a triple threat, Dread summed his game up thusly: "I can shoot the ball, I make good decisions. I pass the ball very well and I'm very physical on defense. I'm a lock-down defender and I just make plays. Coach puts me in the position, and I just go make plays. I don't really have a position. That's what I like to pride myself on. Where Coach puts me, I can go play." Dread is coming o9 a sophomore sea- son in which he posted 9.4 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. – N.B.
