Keith Gilmore last season. "I really ex- perienced something different, and I'd been told before to definitely come up and check the school and that I'd fall in love with it." S a w y e r s a i d he sees the quali- ties in Ewell that make him a good fit for the Irish. And despite send- ing highly rated recruits such as defensive end Jalyn Holmes and defensive back Wayne Davis to Ohio State in recent years, the coach called Ewell's commitment to Notre Dame an "awesome" decision. "While some of the other schools were some of the top schools in the country, personality-wise I wasn't sure that it fit Darnell. Darnell is a very unique kid," Sawyer said. "… He's not big on hanging with the group. He's kind of a loner, except when he's on the field. "I thought Notre Dame fit him a little better than some of the other schools." Ewell had 63 tackles, 15 tackles for loss and four sacks in leading the Titans to the 4A state title game as a junior. S a w y e r s a i d Ewell is so disruptive at defensive tackle that he caused 14 quarterback- center exchange fumbles last season. "He's a beast, he's a very strong kid and he's going to dominate any one guy for the most part,' said Sawyer. "If you don't double-team him, he's going to cause some real issues. "He plays right over the center, so you have to get that center some help or he's going to cause some bad snaps." ✦ "HE'S A BEAST, HE'S A VERY STRONG KID, AND HE'S GOING TO DOMINATE ANY ONE GUY FOR THE MOST PART." NORFOLK (VA.) LAKE TAYLOR COACH HANK SAWYER ON EWELL
