and in 2017 it will be Oct. 17, prior to facing USC a week later. "We always want to create the bye for the players around fall break … it's the only oppor- tunity our football-playing students get to go home," Swarbrick said. "Generally we are able to do it. I wish college football would go to a two- bye system. The year we have two where the cal- endar delivers a second bye is so much healthier for the players. I've tried to advocate for that nationally. I think it would help us enormously." Finally, Notre Dame has not played on the in- ternational circuit since the 2012 opener versus Navy in Ireland, but maintaining an international presence is on the docket. "We want to get back to Europe, but your op- portunities to do these are limited," Swarbrick said. "It works well the first game of the season and the last game of the season — and maybe one can work around fall break. "But every four or five years I'd like it as we get into the future. I'm hopeful that Notre Dame will be in some international market. It's what we should do for the university." A game in China has been speculated on in the past, but Swarbrick said the option there would be confined to an opponent being a Pac- 12 school, most likely Stanford, at the end of the season. — Lou Somogyi 2017 Sept. 2 Temple Sept. 9 Georgia Sept. 16 at Boston College Sept. 23 at Michigan State Sept. 30 Miami (Ohio) Oct. 7 at North Carolina Oct. 21 USC Oct. 28 North Carolina State Nov. 4 Wake Forest Nov. 11 at Miami (Fla.)
