NUMBERS, CONT. August 1990 — For the only time ever in the ACC preseason poll voted on by media at the league's an- nual media day(s), Virginia comes out on top, thanks to 23 first-place votes. Aug. 14-28, 2004 — Basketball legend Dawn Staley helps America win its third straight Olympic gold medal with a 74-63 win over Australia. The guard was a part of the winning squad at the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Games, and was named the 2004 USA Basketball Female Athlete of the Year, in addition to being se- lected to carry the American flag during the opening ceremony of the Athens Games. She later transitioned into coaching, assisting the 2008 squad to another gold in Beijing, and she is on the staff again this year. July 27-Aug. 12, 2012 — UVA athletes earned a trio of gold medals at the last Summer Olympics. Former swimmers Lauren Perdue and Matt McLean were both part of gold medal-winning 4x200-meter relays in London, while soccer star Becky Sauerbrunn helped the U.S. win on the pitch. The Cavs led all ACC schools with three gold medals won for America, and only 10 schools were credited were more medals for Team USA.
