BY MIKE SCANDURA A THIRD CONSECUTIVE TOP-10 finish in the Directors' Cup standings underscored another superb year for Virginia athlet- ics. Further proof is evidenced by the fact Virginia placed in the top 20 for a 10th consecutive year. Virginia captured four ACC championships: women's golf, rowing, women's cross coun- try, and women's swimming and diving. The Cavaliers now own 73 ACC titles since the spring of 2002, which are the most of any ACC school over the last 14 years. UVA's men's tennis team walked off with the NCAA championship while other teams also fared extremely well in NCAA competition. The rowing team placed third; the women's swimming and diving team placed fifth; the men's track and field team placed seventh at the outdoor meet and tied for eighth at the indoor meet; and the women's golf, wom- en's tennis, women's soccer and field hockey teams each advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective NCAA Tournaments. In addition, the men's basketball team ad- vanced to the Elite Eight for the first time since 1995. Overall, 20 of Virginia's 25 teams qualified for NCAA Tournaments. "I'm very thankful for the efforts of our student-athletes, coaches and staff that helped UVA finish in the top 10 of the Directors' Cup for the third consecutive year," athletics director Craig Littlepage said in a statement released by the university. "We receive tre- mendous support from our university adminis- tration, donors and fans. Their contributions to our athletics department play a key role in our success and provide important resources that we've identified in our 'All In For Excellence' fundraising initiative. "We will continue to work to reach our 10- year goals, which include winning 12 NCAA championships and 70 ACC titles and ensur- ing our student-athletes are in a position to be successful in their academic and athletic pursuits." Individual standouts included: • Redshirt fourth-year Malcolm Brogdon, the first basketball player to earn ACC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Years honors in the same season. Those were in addition to his being named a consensus first-team All-American (the first since Ralph Sampson in 1983).
