BY WHITELAW REID S HORTLY AFTER MALCOLM Brogdon was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in late June, a member of the Virginia coaching staff posted a photo on Twitter of Brogdon beaming as he held up his new NBA jersey. Superimposed was a quote from UVA strength and conditioning coach Mike Cur- tis: "He lived every day in pursuit of his goals and the plans that we laid out for him." Indeed. Brogdon is the poster child for what a Virginia player can accomplish if he buys into the system. The Atlanta native didn't come to UVA as the most heralded recruit, but left Charlot- tesville as one of the most decorated players in program history. Last season, Brogdon was named a first- team All-American, becoming just the sec- ond Virginia player to ever receive the honor (Ralph Sampson was the first), and was also the first player in ACC history to win the player of the year and defensive player of the year awards in the same season. Brogdon led UVA to the NCAA Tourna- ment's Elite Eight for the first time since 1995. Arguably, there wasn't a player more valu- able to his team in the country. In Virginia's miraculous comeback victory over Wake Forest in late January — a win that wound up being a huge turning point in the season — Brogdon scored eight of his career- high 28 points in the final 1:19. In UVA's win over North Carolina in late February, Brogdon outplayed Brice Johnson, solidifying his candidacy for ACC Player of the Year with a 26-point, six-rebound, three- assist, two-steal performance.
