IRISH IN THE PROS "He really came on in camp," Giants head coach Ben McAdoo said of Okwara. "He really didn't do a lot in the offseason because he had a hamstring injury. But he bounced back. He takes his coaching well and he really plays with a great amount of energy and passion. "We have a nice group of defensive ends. OV, JPP, Owa, Romeo and Wynn all have some value inside, and they can play inside and outside for us. They can play the run and play the pass. It's a good group." Through the first three preseason games, Pro Football Focus had graded Okwara as the best rookie 4-3 defensive end. The 6-5, 275-pound Ok- wara has strong pass rush skills, and was rewarded with a $15,000 signing bonus and $12,500 in guar- anteed salary before camp. That's much more than most undrafted rookies receive, signaling the Giants' interest. • Former Notre Dame safety Matthias Farley, who participated in training camp with the Arizona Cardinals, was claimed off waivers by the India- napolis Colts Sept. 4. After being cut by the Cardinals, the 5-11, 210-pound Farley was quickly added by the Colts. Farley appeared in 52 games, 26 as a starter, at Notre Dame. He finished his career with 192 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and eight interceptions. He went undrafted, but impressed during the Cardinals' preseason games. Pro Football Focus, which grades every snap of every player, rated Farley as the best rookie safety throughout most of the preseason. • As expected, former Notre Dame star line- backer Jaylon Smith will start his rookie season on the sidelines. When the Dallas Cowboys cut its roster to 75, Smith was placed on the non-football injury list, which will sideline him for at least the first six weeks of the season. Smith was a projected first-round pick until he badly injured his left knee in Notre Dame's Fiesta Bowl loss to Ohio State on New Year's Day. He slipped to the second round, though it was likely he would miss his entire first year in pro football. Smith suffered nerve damage in the knee, the most concerning part of the injury. "Our doctors are not dismayed at all. I'm not," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in July. "It's the type of thing that could really come around. And if it comes around, then we'll take advantage of it. And he's such an impact player that we would try to get him on the field. "In the meantime, he's doing many things that would let you use the word progress.
