14 THE WOLVERINE OCTOBER 2016   INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS Student-Athlete Of The Month Soccer Senior Anna Soccorsi Entering her final season with the Michigan women's soccer team, Anna Soccorsi has found success both in the classroom and on the pitch, but she isn't finished just yet. The environment major has amassed an impres- sive number of academic accolades throughout her career as a Wolverine. Soc- corsi was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar in 2014 and 2015 and earned All-Big Ten Academic hon- ors both years as well. "School has always been very important to me," Soc- corsi said. "Soccer is a huge part of my life, but I also put a lot into the classroom be- cause I know it's extremely important to set yourself up for after soccer. "I really just like to put a lot of effort into what I'm doing in the classroom, and it's always great to get rec- ognition for the hard work that we all put into our aca- demics." The defender from Yardley, Pa., has made her mark on the field as well. In 2014, Soccorsi was named the team's Defensive MVP, an award that was voted on by her team- mates. "It just meant a lot to me that my teammates recog- nized my hard work," Soccorsi said. "We have such a great group of players, so to be chosen as a leader on the back line was a big deal to me and it was an honor." Last season, Soccorsi was a part of a defense that com- piled nine shutouts on its way to a 12-7-2 finish. In the 2016 season, she and the rest of the defense have surrendered just six goals through eight games, including four shutouts in that time. Despite everything she has already achieved, there are still things that Soccorsi wants to accomplish before her time with the team comes to an end. "A big piece of having a good season is for us to finish well in the Big Ten," Soccorsi said. "We really want to finish at the top of our conference, if not win it. "It'll take hard work from everyone on the team and we have such a talented group of players this year. I know that everyone will put in the effort in practice and in games." The Wolverines were bounced out of the second round of the Big Ten Tournament last year by No. 9 Penn State, 1-0, and in order for Michigan to achieve a high finish in the league, the Wolverines will have to improve their play against top teams like the Nittany Lions. However, Soccorsi is no stranger to hard work, on or off the field, and 2016 looks to be another good year for both her and her team. — Leland Mitchinson Soccorsi was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar in 2014 and 2015, and earned All-Big Ten Academic honors both years as well. John Beilein's Wolverines take on a packed slate of games, from a Nov. 4 exhibition contest at Crisler Arena versus Armstrong State, right through the Big Ten Tournament in early March — conducted in Washington, D.C., for the first time ever. Presumably, they'll be playing on beyond the March 8-12 league soiree, but that remains to be seen. Highlights of the Wolverines' non-conference schedule include the 2K Classic Championship Round in New York, the Wolverines taking on Marquette Nov. 17 and either Pittsburgh or SMU the next day; a game at South Carolina Nov. 23; the ACC/Big Ten Challenge game against Virginia Tech Nov. 30 at Crisler Arena; a showdown with Texas at Crisler Dec. 6; and a Dec. 10 road challenge at UCLA. Michigan opens conference play on the road, competing at Iowa's Carver-Hawkeye Arena on New Year's Day, with the time yet to be announced. The Wolverines faced Michigan State just once in each of the last two seasons, but that won't be the case in 2017. U-M plays at the Breslin Center Jan. 29 with MSU coming to Crisler just nine days later, Feb. 7. The Wolverines also take on Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska and Wisconsin twice as well in 2017. Michigan gets Penn State, Maryland, Ohio State and Pur- due just once this season, all at Crisler Arena. U-M plays the following teams only on the road this year: Minnesota, Rutgers, Northwest- ern and Iowa. U-M wraps up the regular season at Nebraska March 5, then heads for Washington, D.C., days later for the Big Ten Tourna- ment. NCAA Tour- nament play begins with the First Four March 14-15 in Day- ton, Ohio, and ends with the title game April 3 in Glendale, Ariz.
