Major League Baseball RICH HILL RETURNS FROM INJURY WITH A VENGEANCE Former Michigan pitcher Rich Hill's return to Major League Base- ball continues to read like a fairy tale. Only a year ago, Hill signed with the Long Island Ducks of the Inde- pendent Atlantic League after being released by the Washington Nation- als' Triple-A affiliate, and his career appeared over. He pitched 11 shutout innings with 21 strikeouts, allowing only three walks and two hits for the Ducks, to earn a minor league deal with Boston. He pitched so well in the minors that the Red Sox called him up to the major league club, where he posted a 2-1 mark with a 1.65 ERA and be- came a coveted free agent in the off- season. Oakland signed the 36-year-old and dealt him to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the trade deadline. De- spite working through blisters on his pitching hand, Hill has been one of the majors' best pitchers this year, standing 12-4 with a 2.06 ERA and 118 strikeouts as of Sept. 19. Since his return to the majors last year, Hill has a 1.74 ERA — the best in baseball over that period — in 124 innings. His comeback story came to a head in a Sept. 10 game at Miami in which he pitched seven perfect innings be- fore Dodgers manager Dave Roberts pulled him. Hill was reportedly "visibly upset" that he didn't get to finish, but he later said he understood the move. "I was pitching well, but that's been a pretty continuous thing throughout the season," Hill told Newsday. "I think there is a bigger picture here, and we all know what it is." It's the playoffs, and the Dodgers were first in the National League West as of Sept. 19. Hill last pitched in the postseason for the 2007 Chicago Cubs, when he started and lost game three of a Na- tional League Division Series against the Diamondbacks. "I think it's possible for anybody to go out there and chase your dream, go after what you love to do," Hill said. "If you don't love what you're doing, you're not going to be happy. You want to do what you love." CLAYTON RICHARD'S LATEST COMEBACK IS A SUCCESS Former Michigan pitcher Clayton Richard is back in San Diego after being released by the Cubs, and he's Through Sept. 19, Hill was 12-4 with a 2.06 ERA and 118 strikeouts in 18 starts this season.
