50 OCT. 3, 2016 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED ND SPORTS BY DAVID MCKINNEY S ophomore cross country runner Annie Heffernan has been on a tear since arriving in South Bend last year. As a freshman, the Cincinnati na- tive competed in four events for the Irish. In her college debut, she took third place at the annual National Catholic with a time of 17:33.9 on the 5,000-meter course. Heffernan finished the season with a 138th- place finish at the NCAA Champi- onships, and was named to the ACC All-Academic Team. This season, Heffernan is build- ing on that success. In the season- opening event, the Crusader Open at Valparaiso, Ind., she led the Irish and was the overall winner of the 5,000-meter race with a time of 18:47.7. In the second event of the season, Heffernan continued her domi- nance, placing first overall again, with a time of 17:22.1. Finishing just two seconds after Heffernan was graduate student Danielle Aragon in 17:24.3. Both runners suffered injuries at the end of last year 's indoor track season, but head coach Matt Sparks said he was impressed with how they bounced back. "Annie and Dani both were in- jured at the end of indoor track, so you never know what to expect when their last significant race was March," Sparks said. "They did a good job of taking care of them- selves over the summer, gaining fit- ness and getting healthy. I feel like we're in a good place on the wom- en's side." ✦ Irish Roundup MEN'S SOCCER (6-1-0, 1-1-0 ACC) Notre Dame suffered its first loss of the season Sept. 16, a 1-0 setback at Louisville. After the defeat dropped Notre Dame to 6-1-0 on the year, the previously No. 1-ranked Irish fell two spots in the polls to No. 3. The Irish looked to get back in the win column versus Syracuse Sept. 23. MEN'S GOLF After finishing in a tie for fifth in a field of 14 teams at the USF Olympic Invitational Sept. 13, the Irish returned to action Sept. 23-25 in Scottsdale, Ariz., participating in the Georgia State Maui Jim Intercollegiate. WOMEN'S SOCCER (6-1-3, 1-0-1 ACC) No. 20 Notre Dame played three straight double-overtime contests for the first time in program history in September. The first was a 0-0 battle at Santa Clara Sept. 9, followed by a 2-2 tie at Stanford Sept. 11 and a 1-1 tie at Syracuse Sept. 18. The Irish picked up a 1-0 win at North Carolina State Sept. 22, and were set to host Pittsburgh Sept. 25. VOLLEYBALL (9-3) The Irish matched their 2015 win total (seven) Sept. 10, and surpassed it with a pair of victories at the Spartan Classic Sept. 16-17 in East Lansing, Mich.
