Since the January 2016 NCAA Convention, the five Auton- omy conferences have focused on student-athlete time demands. Representatives from each of the five Autonomy conferences met in Dallas on April 25-26, 2016. The focus of the meeting was two-fold: 1) Student-athletes should be assured they have adequate time to recover from the physical and mental pressures of their sports; and, 2) Like other students, student-athletes should also be assured they can experience the full range of student life. Effective time management for student-athletes is very much dependent on the sport, on the nature of the institution and on travel and competition schedules. The concept that the Autonomy conferences have focused on involves providing student-athletes with "free time" away from their sport. As such, proposals will be drafted that require every head coach to annually complete a Student-Athlete Time Management Plan (with col- laboration from student-athletes) for the coming year. The plan would be approved by the athletics director and distributed to each student-athlete in the coach's sport. The plan would provide that: 1) Each student-athlete shall have at least one day a week free of required athletically related activity, including associated travel during the competitive season (traditional/ championship and non-traditional/non-championship) and two free days a week during the remainder of the academic year. 2) Each student-athlete shall have at least eight hours overnight of "free time," which shall be provided in a consecutive eight-hour block between the hours of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. 3) All student-athletes shall be free of required athletically related activities for at least one week (seven consecutive days) at the conclusion of the season in order to recover from the season of competition. 4) Each student-athlete shall be provided at least an additional 14 days during the aca- demic year at a time during when academic activities of the institution are in session, that are free of athletically related activity, including associated travel.
