Four-star prospect Tarik Black, who is ranked as the No. 14 wide receiver and No. 99 player nationally by Rivals, no longer communicates with the Irish staff, signaling what many thought before — Notre Dame will not land the talented pass catcher. Black, the teammate of Notre Dame 2017 running back commit C.J. Holmes, is believed to be a Michigan lean. It was thought he would still take a visit to Notre Dame later in the year, but that will not happen. The other is five-star offensive tackle Jedrick Wills of Lexington (Ky.) Lafayette, who is ranked as the No. 4 tackle and No. 16 player nationally by Rivals. Wills has not been in communication with the Notre Dame since the summer. The Irish were considered a major player in his recruit- ment throughout the summer until he visited Alabama, with the Tide holding his favor following the trip. Wills was expected to commit during the final stages of summer, but didn't. However, the Irish never re-entered the competition for him. • Two premier 2017 prospects are working on setting up their official visits to South Bend. Chesapeake (Va.) In- dian River four-star safety Devon Hunter will potentially take his official to South Bend Oct. 15 for the Stanford game. The date is still in the works for Hunter — who is ranked as the No. 3 safety and No. 53 player nationally by Rivals — but it seems the visit will happen. One of Notre Dame's top tar- gets left on the offensive line board is Trey Smith, a four-star tackle at Jackson (Tenn.) Uni- versity School. Smith is working on setting up his official visit for when the Irish take on Virginia Tech Nov. 19. Smith, who is ranked as the No. 14 offensive tackle and No. 91 player nationally by Rivals, was originally plan- ning to take the visit for the Stanford game, but decided to push it back. The change most likely stems from the Rivals four-star wanting to take an unofficial to Tennessee when the Vols take on Alabama in Knoxville the same day as the Notre Dame-Stanford matchup. Getting both players on campus is huge for the Irish and their chances. The visit would be Hunter's first time on campus, and Smith has been to South Bend multiple times. Notre Dame has some ground to make up with Hunter, who's perceived leaders are Virginia Tech, Florida and North Carolina. The Irish have always been in the hunt for Smith, but some around the industry believe Tennes- see has taken control given their early success this season. • Buena Park (Calif.) High Rivals four-star 2017 corner- back Elijah Gates was planning to take an official visit to Notre Dame following the season, but those plans have changed. The Irish have moved on from Gates, according to the cornerback. Gates was told the Irish "have other recruiting needs." — Corey Bodden and David McKinney Recruiting Notes TREY SMITH Follow @BGI_CoreyBodden and @BGI_DMcKinney on Twitter for daily recruiting updates!
