Two Big Ten teams that have had dis- appointments in recruiting the past two months have been Michigan State and Penn State. The Spartans' tumble to 30th is especially noteworthy, as they are coming o8 a Big Ten championship last season. As of this writing, coach Mark Danto- nio and his sta8 had received 16 verbal commitments. Headlining that group are tight end Matt Dotson of Cincinnati; o8ensive lineman Kevin Jarvis of Park Ridge, Ill.; and wide receiver Hunter Rison of Ann Arbor, Mich. All are four- star recruits. Penn State was ranked in August as having one of Rivals' top 20 recruiting classes a9er landing six verbal commit- ments following its Lasch Bash barbeque in late July, but it hasn't gotten another one since the summer. What's more, the class su8ered a signi7cant loss in early October when four-star defensive back Derrek Pitts of South Charleston, W.Va., announced that he was reopening his re- cruitment. The Nittany Lions had 14 verbal com- mitments as of mid-October, with their top players being quarterback Sean Clif- ford of Cincinnati, outside linebacker/safety Brelin Faison-Walden of Greensboro, N.C.; defensive end Yetur Matos of Fredericksburg, Va.; safety Jonathan Sutherland of Alexan- dria, Va.; and o8ensive lineman C.J. Thorpe of Pittsburgh. All 7ve of those prospects have received four stars from Rivals. Here is how the rest of the Big Ten schools were ranked by Rivals heading into late October: Northwestern was 34th, Wisconsin 53rd, Illinois 55th, Indi- ana 61st, Purdue 64th and Minnesota 73rd. It should be noted that among these six schools, Wisconsin and Illinois are the only two with any four-star prospects in their classes. Wisconsin's three four-star prospects are o8ensive lineman Tyler Beach of Port Washing- ton, Wis.; quarterback Jack Coan of Sayville, N.Y.; and o8ensive lineman Kayden Lyles of Scottsdale, Ariz. Illi- nois' four-star recruit is wide receiver Carmoni Green of Miami. ■
