In fact, in the 120 years since Penn State launched its in- tercollegiate program, it has faced the Blue Devils only nine times, most recently in 1970. But these infrequent opponents will renew acquaintances next month at the eight-team Hall of Fame Tip-O: Tournament, which begins with campus games be- fore moving to Connecticut. The Lions haven't fared particularly well against the perennial Atlantic Coast Conference powerhouse, winning only one of those nine previous games – a 51-48 decision in 1949. This year's matchup looks to be another daunting test. Coach Mike Krzyzewski returns four of last season's top 9ve scorers, and those players are joined by Rivals.com's second-ranked recruiting class, a six- player group headed up by forwards Harry Giles and Jayson Tatum, the Nos. 2 and 3 players in the country, respectively. Meanwhile, the Nittany Lions are set to open their season with a youthful roster that includes six players who will be suiting up for the 9rst time in blue and white. But coach Patrick Chambers likes the Lions' long- term potential and is looking to challenge his team in advance of the Big Ten season. The Blue Devils will undoubtedly be happy to oblige. – M.H. SCORECARD ALL SPORTS New AD to oversee performance initiative Looking to create a world-class health and performance science pro- gram, Penn State hired David Hamilton in September to serve as assistant ath- letic director. Hamilton's focus will be on optimizing the health and perform- ance of the university's 800 student- athletes. In the newly created sports science position, he will work closely with the Nittany Lions' medical, ath- letic training, performance enhance- ment, sports psychology and sports nutrition staffs and student-athletes. "We're ecstatic that Dave Hamilton is joining the Penn State family," ath- letic director Sandy Barbour said. "His expertise, education and experience in working with elite student-athletes, along with the collaboration with our coaches and Sport Performance teams, will take our care and performance to the next level." Hamilton comes to Penn State after serving as director of performance science with USA Field Hockey since 2013. In his role, he led the integration of all sports science and medicine for the USA men's and women's national field hockey teams. USA Field Hockey's world ranking improved from 10th to fifth during Hamilton's three years. Prior to working with USA Field Hockey, Hamilton served as head of strength and conditioning with the English Institute of Sport, working with Great Britain's women's field hockey team from 2009-13. Hamilton, who is originally from Durham, England, has served as a consultant and presented to numer- ous professional and amateur sports organizations, including the Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Flyers, Univer- sity of Michigan and a variety of rugby and cricket organizations, in- cluding the Manchester United Foot- ball Club. ■ FOOTBALL 4-2, 2-1 SEPTEMBER 3 W KENT STATE............................................... 33-13 10 L at Pitt........................................................ 42-39 17 W TEMPLE..................................................... 34-27 24 L at Michigan................................................ 49-10 OCTOBER 1 W MINNESOTA........................................ 29-26 (OT) 8 W MARYLAND................................................ 38-14 22 OHIO STATE.............................................. 8 p.m. (ABC) 29 at Purdue..............................................................
