"We definitely have a lot of energy, anticipation and enthusiasm going into this season." It's a deep squad, though that's not something that pays a lot of dividends in rifle, which allows only five shooters in each event per match and counts all five scores. So Miller plans to use multiple lineups of declared shooters through the fall to determine his top shooters for the spring, with the hopes of qualifying the team for the Great American Rifle Conference championships in Akron, Ohio, in late February and the NCAA Championships March 10‑11 in Columbus, Ohio. "We are looking to turn our lineup into a well‑oiled machine," Miller said. ■ Noting The Pack • For the first time since 2008, the Wolfpack rifle team hosted a home match, welcoming top-ranked and four-time defending NCAA champion West Virginia to the floor of newly renovated Reynolds Coliseum. A record crowd of 1,842 spectators filled the seats of the historic arena to see the first match ever held inside the main arena. The team is no stranger to the gym; for years, Reynolds had an air-rifle range in its basement where the team practiced and stored its equipment. When Reynolds closed for renovation in March 2015, the team moved its gear to Broughton Hall and set up a range there. West Virginia won the closely contested match, but the Wolfpack posted an aggregate total of 4,671, the highest score in school history. The match was also broadcast from the floor of Reyn - olds on GoPack.com. "It went amazingly well, even better than we could have expected," veteran head coach Keith Miller said. The Wolfpack also hopes to host some portion of the Wolfpack Invitational at Reynolds Jan. 28-29, 2017. ■ Key Matches • Vs. West Virginia, Oct. 15 — There's no suspense to this season-opening match, since the four- time defending champion Mountaineers have already squeaked by with a 4,709-4,671 victory. The matched featured a pair of Olympian shooters, NC State's Lucas Kozeniesky and West Virginia's Ginny Thrasher, who squared off in the finals of the air rifle competition. • Vs. Kentucky Nov. 18 and at Alaska Fair ‑ banks Nov. 20 — The Wolfpack travels 4,263 miles to Fairbanks, Alaska, for showdowns against the Wildcats and the Nanooks in its final matches of the fall portion of the schedule. • Wolfpack Invitational, Jan. 28‑29: NC State hosts a two-day match with teams and individual shoot - ers from around the region.
