122 ■ THE WOLFPACKER ■ FOOTBALL RECRUITING SAFETY DAVONDRE ROBINSON Santee (S.C.) Lake Sumter High The four-star prospect goes by the nick- name "Tank," and he has a couple of connections to the NC State football program. One of his cousins is James Valdez, a corner NC State signed in the 2016 class who is red- shirting. Robinson also is a good friend of NCSU sophomore corner Freddie Phillips. In June, Robinson told The Wolfpacker that the two fellow South Carolina natives have aggressively recruited him to NC State. "They are in my ear a lot, telling me to come here with the South Carolina boys," Robinson noted. Robinson rarely gives updates on his recruitment, but he did tell the South Caro- lina newspaper The State in September that NC State was recruiting him the hardest. Rivals.com rates Robinson (6-0, 190 pounds) as the No. 3 prospect in South Carolina and the No. 23 senior safety in the country. He has been picked for the Shrine Bowl. SAFETY DERRICK SMITH Jacksonville (Fla.) Trinity Christian There was a time that the three-star pros- pect seemed destined to end up at Miami, but in the past month Smith has backed off those claims, especially since the Canes have a pair of safety commits. He was attended their home game against Florida State Oct. 8. On Sept. 17, Smith made the trip to NC State for its home game against Old Dominion on an unofficial visit. Other schools Smith has mentioned include Cen- tral Florida, Louisville, Southern Cal and Virginia Tech. The 6-1, 195-pounder hails from the same high school that produced NC State freshman offensive tackle Kendall Brown, who is expected to redshirt this fall. Through the first seven games of his senior year, Smith had 30 tackles, two intercep- tions and one pass broken up. OFFENSIVE LINEMAN JESS SPEIGHT Richmond (Va.)
